Spring from Sea to Vine Zoom Call

On Friday May 8, 2020 the Garden State Bailliage came “together” by Zoom to celebrate “Spring from Sea to Vine.” Our Bailli, George Staikos worked with two of our professional members to create an innovative virtual event. Mike Beneduce, Professional du Vin and winemaker/owner of Beneduce Vineyards chose two of his award-winning wines that were ideal for spring. Starting with these wines, Mark Drabich of Metropolitan Seafood developed two recipes to pair with these wines. Mark and his staff packed all the ingredients needed and made them available either by curbside pickup or shipment. Confreres ordered the wines direct from the winery. We all prepared our dinners individually, and at 7 PM joined together by Zoom. Bailli Staikos acted as master of ceremonies, skillfully ensuring that all questions were answered and that everyone participated.

Beneduce Vineyards is a member of the New Jersey Winemaker’s Coop, and was rated one of the top 25 vineyards in the US by Travel + Leisure magazine. Their 2015 Pinot Noir received a 93 from James Suckling, the highest score ever given a wine from New Jersey. Metropolitan Seafood has been providing incredibly fresh seafood to the Hunterdon County Area for decades. Their support to the community has been incredible during these difficult times. Their website notes that “along with the obvious health issues some of you might be finding yourself in severe financial crisis, due to layoffs during this time. Please do not hesitate to call the store or direct message us on Facebook or Instagram so we may provide a hot meal, free of charge, to those in need. This will be practiced with the utmost discretion maintaining complete privacy to all of those involved. You have plenty to worry about but we will have no one in our community go hungry tonight.”

Our dinner began with a smoked lemon trout pate, paired with Beneduce’s 2018 Chardonnay. The main course was roasted harissa salmon over a pearl couscous, paired with the 2016 Beneduce Centerfold Pinot Noir. Dessert was on our own.

While we missed being together in the same room, the food and companionship were still fantastic.
